It’s definitely been fun sharing some little snippets I’ve learned in the last decade of married life with you over the last few months… And I’ve grown increasingly excited about this months post over the last week or so. I think it’s really important to do things that make you feel uncomfortable, together. Stepping out of the norm, into a new situation, where you are both “newbies” and on an equal playing field is really great. We’ve done this in a few realms together over the last twelve years together (nearly 10 years married) and I love what it does for our communication, and playfulness. Of course it’s been things like, learning to open businesses, or buy homes when we were 22, or you know, learning to parent. But last years joint hobby was much less stressful than all of those things. Last summer our boys joined a rock climbing team, so naturally James and I decided to start rock climbing together too. We were already at the gym multiple times a week while our boys practiced, or attended camps, so it just made sense that we joined in the fun too. I’m certainly not as good as he is, but, it’s been really exciting to watch him grow into an even better athlete than he already was (can we say soccer star!) but watching him flash routes and traverse problems only pushes me harder (you like my use of rock climbing lingo). It’s great as a couple sport, but also as a family sport. It’s where you can find us 3-4 times a week, and it’s been amazing to create memories together in something that would normally make me feel extremely uncomfortable. We started climbing after my cancer diagnosis, rounds of treatment and surgery…when I had a new larger body, and definitely not one that is typically built for climbing. But I think proving to myself, James and the kids, that I can and will continue to do things outside of my comfort zone was great for them to see as well. As our friend who owns the gym says, I’ll continue to stay outside of my comfort zone by climbing, and James by allowing me to take pictures of him (even while at the gym).
